McAllister sprinkles hints throughout the book but saved the downpour for the reveal in just a few chapters.
For me, the pacing of this book felt completely unbalanced. I appreciate the story and the resolution, but felt that the best part of this book occurred in the last 5 to 10 chapters. It seemed that the story focused on developing the relationship of Simone and Lucy, the mother and daughter duo of the book, that it almost forgot that it was supposed to be a thriller. Of course McAllister was able to place hints throughout the book that become clear as the story comes to a close and I genuinely did not see the twist coming. I personally would have liked a hint maybe somewhere around the halfway mark as to who the kidnapper is.
For my first Gillian novel, I definitely will give her another read, as I don’t think you can judge someone off of one piece of work. This book is not bad, I just found it hard to keep picking back up because I felt like there wasn’t much pulling me along for the ride.
